KENNEDY CENTER MISSION

The mission of the Kennedy Center is to assist residents of
Charlestown in meeting basic needs through the provision of
services which help eliminate poverty and its causes by promoting
self-sufficiency; and to operate neighborhood services with the
maximum participation of residents, fostering economic
independence by meeting the health, educational, employment,
recreational, and welfare needs of the community.

KENNEDY CENTER HISTORY

Its longevity, responsiveness to clients, and excellent services make
the Kennedy Center in Charlestown a place where residents feel
comfortable seeking assistance.  Our human service work is tied to
the needs and desires of community residents, with Charlestown’s
small size enabling staff to really get to know many residents.

In 1964, the Kennedy Center opened with an emphasis on Head
Start and job-training and placement programs.  That focus has
expanded over the years to include full-day childcare, advocacy,
home care and recreational services for the elderly, substance
abuse counseling, and community services, including ethnically
focused services for the many immigrants who have become part of
the community in recent years.

KENNEDY CENTER SERVICES
Head Start, pre-school and after-school programs provide a variety
of childcare options to residents.

The Kennedy Center Community Resource Center provides a family-
focused community center, bringing together the many groups of
people who now make up Charlestown’s neighborhood.  All
segments of the town use the Resource Center for social,
educational, and vocational activities.  Some group activities are
ethnically focused, such as Encuentro Latino (a community
leadership group) and a support group for Asian residents.  Other
activities focus on specific age groups such as the exercise class
for seniors and the parenting program for parents.  The Community
Resource Center offers the community public access to technology,
introductory computer classes, and case management services to
assist residents to improve their educational and employment
opportunities as well as access to legal, financial, and social
services.

At Café.com, located in the Community Resource Center, residents
are invited to come in each morning for coffee, refreshments, and
information.  They can use the Café’s computers, access the
Internet and scan the bulletin boards for useful listings.

The Senior Services program helps reduce isolation through daily
social activities and programs while the Homemaker Program
provides home health services, cleaning, shopping, meal
preparation, and companionship for neighborhood residents who are
physically, mentally, or emotionally disabled.

Bilingual case managers throughout the agency provide residents
with individual and family counseling to help them access the many
social, education, employment, and child care resources available in
Charlestown and throughout Boston.
